Abel Twitchell House, 1774

The Abel Twitchell House is the only 18th-century structure still standing and was the home of the first settler in Harrisville village. It overlooked the grist and sawmill that he built next to Goose Brook; the early settlement was, in fact, known as “Twitchell’s Mills.”

It is a wood-framed, 2½-story center-chimney dwelling set into the side of the hill. The façade is essentially Georgian in style, slightly asymmetrical, and has undergone changes over time. Original windows and front entry were replaced with “updates” consistent with later architectural styles.
