To preserve and enhance the quality, beauty, and historical significance of Harrisville village, the environment, and the way of life in Harrisville. Historic Harrisville, Inc. (HHI) seeks to cooperate with the Town of Harrisville and support its activities in furtherance of the mutual goal of preserving and protecting the environment and way of life in Harrisville. None of the activities is meant to impinge on the rights, authority, or responsibilities reserved to the Town of Harrisville.

Historic Harrisville, Inc. (HHI) has been entrusted with the stewardship of the Harrisville National Historic Landmark District since 1971. From the beginning, the foundation recognized that the careful and responsible management of the landmark went beyond preserving the historic buildings and landscapes that fell within the district. Rather, it is essential to the town’s heritage, character, and integrity that the people who work in Harrisville are able to live here and that the town remains economically diverse, i.e., that we have a successful mix of working people, families, professionals, vacationers, and retired people. In carrying out its stewardship role, HHI has the following goals, adapted from those set forth in the original plan of 1971:

 Mission Goals

  • Maintain the essential character of Harrisville
  • Adapt historic buildings for reuse in the modern world
  • Provide a system of legal preservation covenants
  • Promote the restoration, maintenance, and preservation of the Historic District
  • Continue strong textile tradition
  • Sustain the vitality of the local economy
  • Conserve open space around the village
  • Provide affordable housing
